Gunfire in Birmingham’s Evergreen Bottoms neighborhood leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

Gunfire rang out early Sunday at a Birmingham apartment building, leaving one man dead and another injured.

Birmingham police were dispatched at 12:23 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 1700 block of 32nd Place North in the Evergreen Bottoms community in Norwood.

When officers got on the scene, they found a man unresponsive right outside an apartment unit. A second man was discovered wounded nearby in a grassy area.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the unresponsive man dead on the scene. The second victim was taken UAB Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Investigators believe the men were hanging out near an apartment when someone opened fire on them. Multiple shell casings were found in the parking.

No arrests have been made.

“We know people were outside and we know someone saw something,’’ Fitzgerald said.

The man killed in Birmingham’s 88th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 122 homicides, including the 88 in Birmingham.
